Property Damage (PD) Claim

What is a "PD" claim?

A PD claim is made through your auto insurance company (insurer) for damages to your insured car, van, truck or other motor vehicle as a result of an automobile accident (accident).

Who can make a "PD" claim?

The person who is the named insured on the vehicles involved in the accident is the only person who can make a PD claim.

What is the significance of fault for the accident?

If you have collision coverage on your auto insurance policy, you will pay the deductible as per the amount agreed on in your insurance contract.

If you do not have collision coverage on your policy, your insurer will not be responsible for the repair or replace of your vehicle.

Your premium will increase, unless you have accident forgiveness for the first at fault accident.

Whether or not you have collision coverage, your vehicle is be repaired or replaced by your insurer.

You do not pay a deductible for the repair or replacement of your vehicle.

Your premium will not increase as a result of the accident or your claim.

How to start a "PD" claim?

You must notify your insurer of the accident as soon as possible. Your insurer will then request information they need to process your claim.

At the same time and on an ongoing basis, your insurer will do a variety of investigations to determine your eligibility and entitlement to the repair or replacement of your vehicle.

If your insurance company determines you ARE eligible, they will deem you entitled to have your vehicle repaired or replaced.

The replacement of your vehicle is achieved by offering you the market value of your vehicle based on your vehicle's make, year, model, kilometres and condition.

Your entitlement to a repair or a replacement of your vehicle is based on the findings of an appraiser hired by your insurer.

If your insurer determines you are NOT eligible, they will deem you not entitled to the repair or replacement of your vehicle.

What if you disagree with the insurer's decision?

You have the right to challenge any and all decisions made by your auto insurer.

Your first option is to negotiate with your auto insurer. If you and your insurer are unable to reach an agreement, your next option is to start the legal process by filing an application with the dispute resolution.
